Britain’s only giant pandas will not now breed after male Yang Guang has both his testicles removed when zoo experts discover tumors.

  • Yang Guang arrived at Edinburgh Zoo in 2011 with experts hoping he’d breed
  • But despite various attempts, female panda Tian Tian never became pregnant
  • Tumors developed on Yang Guang’s testicles recently and have been removed
  • Now the male panda won’t breed and the zoo is investigating other opportunities

Britain’s only giant pandas will now not be unable to breed after the male had both his testicles removed after zoo experts discovered tumours.

Yang Guang (Sunshine), who arrived at Edinburgh Zoo in 2011, had been hoped for a number of years to breed with female panda Tian Tian (Sweetie).

But on Saturday, November 17 both of Yang Guang’s testicles were removed following the recent discovery of tumors.

Edinburgh Zoo will now look into future breeding opportunities.

Darren McGarry, head of living collections at the zoo, said: ‘We are pleased Yang Guang is recovering well.

‘Testicular tumours have previously been reported in giant pandas.

‘The tumours we removed developed recently so they have not been a factor in Yang Guang and Tian Tian not having had a cub.

‘We will discuss next steps, including future breeding possibilities, with our partners in China over coming weeks.’
